I've just returned from the beautiful Smoky Mountains! My sister and
her husband invited my family and my mom to go along with them {my hubby couldn't go this time :( }. What a wonderful, relaxing
time we had! I'm going to share a few medicines I brought with me to keep us healthy and happy on our trip, but first I'll tell you a little bit about it!
Our resort was in the mountains and out in the country - just perfect!! One evening while on the balcony, we spotted a mama bear and 3 baby cubs walking across the mountains right outside our balcony! This was not way off in the distance, this was right outside our room! How awesome!! :) Unfortunately I was dealing with fading daylight and trees in the way, so this was the best picture I could snap.
The mountains are so majestic and amazing, proclaiming the power and might of their Creator.
I greatly enjoyed the time spent at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountain National Park. There is nothing I enjoy more than stepping back in time, visiting old homes and churches! This house above contained a goods store in the 2 rooms on the right, and the left room and upstairs was the space used for living quarters.
I've always loved the thought of living back then {minus some of the hardships}. How fascinating it is to see the hard work and many hours a family would put into a small home like this. This particular house above and below has 3,000 small shingles that were individually cut and made by hand! Simply amazing! We are so lazy and pampered today, aren't we?
Now, back to the medicines. :) When traveling, I always make sure I bring medicines with me to help my family feel well and avoid picking up some bug from the places we visit. Sometimes eating different foods, using different water to bathe in and being in a strange climate can compromise our immune system, and cause suffering to someone in the family. Years ago when I didn't administer my concoctions to my family, I could pretty much bet that one of the girls would come down with a fever or virus during the last part of vacation. Below are things I brought with me for this trip.
The best thing about my traveling medicine cabinet is that there is not a single harmful ingredient in any of it!! Why administer medicines that contain ingredients that are harmful and can compromise your health, when there are natural, effective alternatives? :)

I always give my family some sort of immune booster once a day starting a week before we plan to leave for our trip. This can be colloidal silver, echinacea, elderberry syrup, etc. Giving the immune system an extra boost before we leave prepares our bodies for the trip. For the trip I usually bring the colloidal silver with me and administer one dose a day. Silver not only boosts the immune system and does an amazing job to fight and prevent any sickness, it can also be used as a remedy for ear infections and food poisoning.
On this trip I brought along my cough medicine because the baby was battling slight congestion and occasionally coughing. The properties in this cough medicine work wonders in breaking up and getting rid of congestion! You always want to be aggressive when the slightest cough or raspy breathing is heard. Doing this will keep the situation from becoming serious! You can give this homemade cough medicine every 15 minutes if needed, whereas over-the-counter medicine can only be given every 2-4 hours because of the unsafe ingredients it contains.
Cayenne pepper is my favorite remedy for headaches. I have not had to use pain relievers since using it. It is also used to stop bleeding, heartattacks, strokes, shock. This is a must to have on hand!
This ointment can also be used for headaches. I normally drink the cayenne and rub this ointment on the area of pain for headaches. It can be rubbed on the sinus areas of the face to relieve pressure and drain clogged sinuses. I rub it behind ears for ear aches and infections, and also on the chest and back for congestion and coughs. It's great stuff!
This is my favorite salve for cuts and bug bites. It heals and fights infection, plus it does a great job of taking the itch out of the bites!
Great to use for stomach aches. Breathe the oil in deeply and place a few drops on the stomach throughout the day to ward off nausea and stomach aches. If pregnant, do not use the oil until the last trimester!
This oil is my favorite for removing ticks, breathing in to protect against viruses and sicknesses, and relieving congestion. Can also be placed on the head for headaches, and used to kill infections.
What medicines do you take on vacation?

Glad to see you enjoyed our Smokies :) We've had a thriving bear population for the last few years.I love using silver. We also buy extra of the mini peppermint candy canes at Christmas time so that we have an emergency stash throughout the year if the tummy bug comes to visit. We've found they work well for nausea. My oldest DD loves having a peppermint oil scented "squishy" for her face when her sinuses are giving her fits.
